JESSICA VALLANCE OWEN
Transferable Skills
Communication
Communication is important especially when working in a team because if you clearly communicate your expectations of a task it will increase productivity. I am a good listener, honest with my feedback and opinions and able to clearly present my own ideas.
Creativity
There is a need for creative and innovative ideas in any industry, especially this one. During my time at university, in my teams I have come up with the concept for both events that we have put on, by using my imagination and utilising my creative abilities.
Motivator
According to this team roles test, I am a motivator and positive thinker. If anyone ever has any doubts I am always there to support them and encourage them to work to the best of their ability. If everyone is happy it creates a better working environment which increases productivity.
Organisation
This is a vital skill for any event manager, as they are usually doing more than one project or task at a time. I have successfully juggled my academic work, part time jobs and a social life by keeping a diary, setting my own personal deadlines and prioritising tasks.
Teamwork
I am happiest when working in a team, and always pull my weight, ensuring equal responsibility. I thrive when brainstorming ideas together and supporting one another. Assigning roles to those best suited to do them and sharing the workload equally has proven to be very efficient.
Time Management
Throughout my degree I have balanced academic work with employment which has proven I can manage my time effectively. I use my time wisely by setting myself goals, making schedules and to-do lists, and focusing on high priority tasks.
Customer Service
I've had a number of jobs in the hospitality sector, giving me many opportunities to put these skills into use. Being front of house I've had to be friendly and professional, especially when dealing with customer complaints. This is useful for this industry when dealing with large numbers of customers.
Sociability
Moving schools so often growing up has made me confident in meeting new people and making friends with ease. I am outgoing and approachable which is key when networking and building good relationships with potential partners.
Problem Solving
In this industry, working with so many people, you are relying on others so problems do arise. I have the ability to look at problems with a clear head, staying calm and coming up with solutions. For example, we had licensing problems for our event so chose another film with a similar message.
Personal Development
I'm always eager to try new things and learn as much as I can. More importantly I am aware of my own strengths and weaknesses, which has made me good at reflecting on my actions and evaluating my performances, allowing me to grow both personally and professionally.
Computer Skills
Through university and previous employment I have become very familiar with Microsoft. Using programmes such as Word, PowerPoint & Excel to create documents, present ideas and construct budgets. This is important in any working environment.
Presentation Skills
I've had to do compulsory presentations as part of my degree and I have greatly improved since starting university. I make sure I am prepared and well rehearsed, resulting in me feeling confident, speaking clearly and getting my point across effectively.
