About Me

My name is Jessica Renée Vallance-Owen and I recently graduated from Falmouth University with a First Class Honours in BA(Hons) in Creative Events Management.

I've spent the majority of my life living in London and just outside of Liverpool. Both cities are renowned for their music scene, performing arts, sporting events, galleries and museums - with Liverpool winning European Capital of Culture in 2008 and London home to a number of famous landmarks that brings in tourists from across the globe. Growing up around these incredible cities I've been to all sorts of events, taking in everything the city has to offer. The rest of my time was spent in various different places across the UK as I moved from school to school. Having moved schools so often, I have become confident in meeting new people and I'm happiest and most effective when working in a team.

My time at university, along with various jobs within the hospitality sector along the way, has not only made me more confident in myself as an individual but has given me the opportunity to gain invaluable transferable skills. I hope to always keep broadening my knowledge and expanding my skill set, learning from both my successes and my failures, in what ever follows after university.

My Interests

My family owns a small cottage in Scotland and we've been going there as often as we can for as long as I can remember. We spend the majority of the time outdoors embracing nature, swimming in the lochs (Scottish for lakes), exploring the forest and doing various water-sports from canoeing and sailing to water-skiing and knee-boarding. We also do a lot of hiking and one of my biggest accomplishments is having climbed the tenth biggest mountain in Scotland, someday day I'll do the other nine! I love being outdoors which is one of the main reasons why I chose to study in Falmouth, as it is known for its unique and breathtaking coastline and there is plenty to do. I enjoy rock pooling, sea swimming and in my first year of university I was a member of the Surf Society.

As well as Scotland I have been extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to visit a number of different countries with my family, which has allowed me to experience different walks of life and has inspired me to do as much travelling as I possibly can after university.

My love of the outdoors is part of the reason why I am so passionate about the environment and sustainability. I do as much as I can to live sustainably; I am a vegetarian, I use public transport to get around, I limit my water consumption and I recycle. In addition, I have helped put on events to raise awareness and encourage other people to become more sustainable and I am also currently part of the Green Living Society where the majority of the time is spent at the allotments on campus gardening and growing vegetables.

"The single greatest lesson the garden teaches us is that our relationship to the planet need not be zero-sum, and that as long as the sun still shines and people still can plan and plant, think and do, we can, if we bother to try, find ways to provide for ourselves without diminishing the world."

-Michael Pollan, 2008

My Ambitions

Short Term - Now that I have graduated from university with the best grade possible, I would like to do an internship to enhance the skills that I already have and use them in a real work place environment. I would also like to become an assessor for A Greener Festival and do as much travelling as I can.

Long Term - After I graduate I plan to move back to Liverpool where I am fortunate enough to live, as such a big city offers a range of different job opportunities which I'm very excited about. I am completely open to different roles within a company but ultimately my main goal is to eventually be a part of a sustainable events company or venue so that I can put the sustainable practices I have learnt into use, and use them to educate, encourage and inspire other people to become more sustainable in their everyday lives, whilst also continually learning as much as I can throughout my career. I think I would be an asset to a company like this because my personal interest and respect for their values and ethos means I would undertake all work with the utmost enthusiasm and dedication. I am also currently planning on doing a Masters in Digital Marketing in 2020, as marketing was what I enjoyed most and did best during my degree, and I wish to further my knowledge and skills in this area, and hopefully make a career out of it!
